1. What do you paint on?

Generally I paint on 2.5 – 3 inch gallery canvases, as I like the look of these deep canvases and it eliminates the need for further framing. Ocassionally I will paint on canvas boards and masonite which I pre-gesso and add a black coating.

2. Why do you paint on a coloured background?

I find it a struggle to paint on a white surface, I see the colours more accurately on a colour. Also, I like to paint in one sitting and have some of the background colour show through.

3. Why oils?

I love the fluidity of this medium, the way the colours mix on the canvas, the texture that can be created. I can lose myself in the process.

4. Do you varnish your paintings?

Yes, I feel it is vital to my paintings to bring depth and luster to the colours.

5. Did you go to art school?

No, I am predominately self taught.
